Normally we know integers mean the whole numbers and their opposites. Whole numbers is nothing but o and positive numbers. So opposite of whole numbers is negative numbers. We have to indicate the negative numbers using the – sign. So integers negative numbers is nothing but the opposites of the whole numbers. We can represent the integers negative numbers using the number line. Here we will see the operations using the integers negative numbers.
Operations using integers negative numbers:
We can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operations using integer negative numbers.
Addition operation using integers negative numbers:
If we add any two integer negative numbers we will get another one negative numbers. Because the addition rule for negative numbers is
–a + -b = - (a + b)
We will add the opposites of the negative numbers and we have to use the same sign for answer.
We will see an example for addition operation.
Add the following integers:
-94 + -84
Solution:
-94 + - 84 = -94 – 84
= - (94 + 84)
= -178
Subtraction operation using integers negative numbers:
Subtraction operation is like the same as normal subtraction.
Example:
Subtract the following numbers:
-28 – (-32)
-28 + 32 = +4
Here 32 > 28 so the answer will be positive.
Multiplication operation:
Multiplication operation is nothing but same as the ordinary multiplication. But multiplication of any two integer negative numbers will be a positive number.
Example:
Multiply the following:
-9 X -8
Solution:
-9 X -8 = + 72
Division operation:
Division operation is like the ordinary division. Here also the answer will be in positive.
Example:
Divide the following `(-24) / (-8)`
Solution:
`(-24) / (-8) = + 3`
My forthcoming post is on six trigonometric functions chart and math word problems for 7th grade will give you more understanding about Algebra.
How to represent the integers negative numbers:
To represent the negative integer numbers we can use the number line. We have to move towards left from 0.
Example:
Represent the following number using number line. -3
Solution:
To represent -3 we have to move 3 units left from 0.
