Solution by Elimination

Two or more equations with a set of unknown variables are known as system of equations. System of equation can be solved by finding the variables of the equation. System of equations can be solved by two methods i.e. elimination method and substitution method. Elimination method is the easiest method to find the solution for the problem other than substitution method. Finding solution for system of equation through elimination method involves basic arithmetic operations.

I like to share this Elimination Method with you all through my article.

Procedure to Solving for Solution by Elimination:

The following are the steps for solving system of equations involving elimination method,

Step 1: The first step is to equalize any one variable of the given equations.

Step 2: Now cross out the variables which is equal.

Step 3: Perform addition or subtraction operation for another variable and constant.

Step 4: If possible divide the variable number on both sides

Step 4: The resultant value is the answer for one variable.

Step 5: For finding the value of another variable, Plug in the value of that variable in any one of the equation. Using these steps we can find the solution for the given problem.
Problem for Solution by Elimination:

Solve the following equation by elimination method

4x – 6y = –8

2x + y  = 24

Solution:

Here we have to equalize any one of the variable by multiplying required number.

Now we have to multiply 2 with equation 2.

2x (2) + y (2) = 24(2)

4x +2y = 48

4x – 6y = –8

4x + 2y = 48

Now multiply equation 2 with negative sign to cross out variable x,

4x – 6y = –8

-4x - 2y = -48

-8y = -56

Divide 8 on both sides

-8y/8 = -56/8

-y = -7

y = 7

I am planning to write more post on an example of an algebraic expression and Statistical Probability. Keep checking my blog.

Now plugging the variable y in equation 1,

4x – 6y = -8

4x – 6(7) = -8

4x – 42 = -8

Add 42 on both sides,

4x -42 + 42 = -8 + 48

4x = 40

Divide 4 on both sides

4x/4 = 40/4

x = 10

Here the solution for x = 10 and y = 7.
