Crop rotation is one of the oldest and effective cultivation strategy in which dissimilar crops planted in specific field without cultivating the same crop. The general types of crops considered in crop rotation cycle are like shallow-rooted crops followed by deep-rooted crops, nitrogen consumers followed by nitrogen fixers, heavy feeders followed by light feeders, etc.
I like to share this Rotation Geometry with you all through my article.
The advantages of crop rotation are described below.
Common Advantages of Crop Rotation
Crop rotation helps for the most efficient usage of the available soil nutrients with minimum addition of external fertilizers as, it improves the distribution and availability of plant nutrients in the soil when we vary crops according to their feeding range.
Nitrogen is one of macronutrient essential for plant gets depleted from soil easily. Crop rotation improves soil nitrogen content especially when leguminous crops included for cultivation in the crop rotation cycle.
Cultivation of deep-rooted crop and then a shallow-rooted crop, ensure that the unequal distribution of nutrients and leached nutrients gets consumed by the other crops due to the difference in their root system.
Cultivation of continuously same crop depletes the specific nutrients of soil, while crop rotation reduces the depletion of specifically one particular nutrient.
I am planning to write more post on Square Root Formula and list of the prime numbers. Keep checking my blog.
Crop rotation helps in preventing the transmission of disease. As the disease affecting one plant would not affect the other. Even though the previous crop is lost due to disease the next crop can be protected if a different crop is cultivated rather cultivating the same crop has increased risk of getting affected by the disease.
Crop rotation also helps to control weeds and some insect pests.
Crop rotation reduces the expenditure of farmer spending on pesticides and fertilizers.
Crop rotation increase farmer’s income diversity by reducing his dependence on one specific crop.
Crop rotation with deep and shallow-rooted crops improves water utilization as water gets absorbed from the different levels of soil in different years.
The types of crops need to used and the time frame of the rotation sequence generally depends on factors like soil quality, climate, and also commercial importance.
